Zlatni Rat (the Golden Cape) is the finest beach in Croatia and one of the most extraordinary natural beaches in Europe — a spectacular white pebble spit extending 500m into the crystal-clear Adriatic, flanked by pine trees and turquoise water on both sides. The beach is unique in that it changes shape with the currents and winds — the tip of the spit shifts direction depending on the sea conditions. The water on both sides of the spit is crystal-clear and shallow, making it ideal for swimming. The beach is the most photographed natural feature in Croatia.
Bol is the finest windsurfing destination in the Adriatic — the maestral wind (a strong, reliable afternoon sea breeze that blows from the northwest from May to September) creates perfect windsurfing conditions at Zlatni Rat. The Big Blue Sport centre at Zlatni Rat is the finest windsurfing school in Croatia and offers lessons and equipment hire for all levels. The beach is also excellent for kitesurfing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The windsurfing conditions at Zlatni Rat are the most consistent in the Adriatic.
Bol is the most charming resort town on Brac — a beautiful, small town at the foot of Zlatni Rat, with a charming old town of stone houses, a beautiful Dominican monastery (the most important monument in Bol, with an extraordinary collection of paintings and a beautiful cloister), excellent restaurants and a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. The town is much quieter and more authentic than Hvar Town and is the finest base for exploring Brac. The promenade between Bol and Zlatni Rat (15 minutes walk) is the finest coastal walk on the island.
Vidova Gora (778m) is the highest peak in the Dalmatian islands — a dramatic mountain above Bol, with the most extraordinary panoramic views in Dalmatia: the entire island of Brac, the islands of Hvar, Vis and Korcula, the Makarska Riviera and (on a clear day) the Italian coast. The mountain is accessible by car (a narrow road from Bol) or on foot (a 3-hour hike from Bol). The views from the summit are the finest in the Dalmatian archipelago and are unmissable for those visiting Brac.
Brac has excellent food and wine — the most celebrated Brac products include the extraordinary Brac lamb (the finest lamb in Croatia, raised on the aromatic herbs of the island's karst landscape), the finest olive oil in Dalmatia (the Brac olive oil has been produced for over 2,000 years and is the most celebrated in Croatia) and the excellent local wine (Posip and Plavac Mali). The best restaurants are in Bol and in Supetar (the main town on Brac, on the north coast — 50 minutes from Split by ferry).
Supetar is the main town on Brac — a charming, authentic town on the north coast of the island, with a beautiful harbour, a fine old town, excellent restaurants and the most convenient ferry connection to Split (50 minutes). The town is much quieter and more authentic than Bol and is the finest base for those who want to explore the whole island. The Supetar cemetery (the most extraordinary cemetery in Croatia — a beautiful park of extraordinary sculptural monuments by the Dalmatian sculptor Ivan Rendic) is the most unusual attraction on Brac.
Milna is the most beautiful village on the west coast of Brac — a charming, quiet village in a beautiful sheltered bay, with a fine Baroque church, excellent restaurants and the most authentic and unhurried atmosphere on the island. The village is popular with sailors and is the finest anchorage on Brac. The west coast of Brac (between Milna and Supetar) has the most beautiful and unspoilt coastal scenery on the island, with several excellent swimming spots and the most dramatic limestone cliffs in Dalmatia.
Brac is accessible by car ferry from Split to Supetar (50 minutes, runs hourly) or by catamaran from Split to Bol (1 hour). There is a small airport on Brac (Brac Airport, near Bol) with seasonal flights from some European cities. May to June and September to October are the best times to visit — Zlatni Rat is extremely crowded in July and August. Book accommodation in Bol well in advance for peak season. A hire car or scooter is useful for exploring the island beyond Bol and Supetar.
