Top 8 Things To Do in Venice

St Mark's Square, the Grand Canal, the Doge's Palace, gondola rides, Murano and Burano islands and the most extraordinary and romantic city atmosphere in the world.

01

St Mark's Square & Basilica

St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) is the most beautiful square in Italy and one of the most extraordinary in the world — a vast, elegant piazza surrounded by the extraordinary St Mark's Basilica (the most beautiful Byzantine church in the world, covered in golden mosaics), the Doge's Palace, the Campanile (the finest viewpoint in Venice) and the Procuratie (the most elegant arcaded buildings in Italy). The square is the heart of Venice and the finest place to experience the extraordinary atmosphere of the city.

02

Doge's Palace

The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) is the finest Gothic palace in Europe — the former seat of the Venetian Republic, with extraordinary state rooms (the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, the largest room in Europe when it was built, with a ceiling painting by Tintoretto), the Bridge of Sighs (the most famous bridge in Venice, connecting the palace to the prison) and the most important collection of Venetian art outside the Accademia. The palace is the single most important monument in Venice. Book tickets online in advance.

03

The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal is the most spectacular waterway in the world — a 3.8km S-shaped canal running through the heart of Venice, lined with over 200 extraordinary palaces (palazzi) built between the 13th and 18th centuries. The finest way to see the Grand Canal is on the vaporetto (water bus) No. 1, which stops at every landing stage along the canal. The Rialto Bridge (the most famous bridge in Venice, completed in 1591) and the Ca' d'Oro (the most beautiful Gothic palace on the canal) are the finest monuments on the Grand Canal.

04

Gondola Rides

A gondola ride is the most romantic experience in Italy — a traditional flat-bottomed boat, propelled by a gondolier with a single oar, gliding through the narrow canals of Venice. The gondola is the most iconic symbol of Venice and a gondola ride is the finest way to experience the extraordinary network of canals and the beautiful buildings that line them. The standard gondola ride lasts 30–40 minutes and costs approximately €80–100 (for up to 6 people). The most atmospheric rides are in the early morning or evening.

05

Murano & Burano

Murano and Burano are the most beautiful and distinctive islands in the Venetian Lagoon. Murano is famous for its extraordinary glassblowing tradition (Murano glass has been produced on the island since 1291) — the glass factories are open to visitors and the glass museum is the finest in the world. Burano is the most colourful island in Italy — a fishing village of brightly painted houses in extraordinary shades of red, yellow, blue and green, famous for its lace-making tradition. Both islands are accessible by vaporetto from Venice.

06

Food & Cicchetti

Venice has excellent food — the most distinctive Venetian dishes include sarde in saor (sardines in sweet and sour sauce), bigoli in salsa (thick pasta with anchovy sauce), risotto al nero di seppia (risotto with cuttlefish ink), baccala mantecato (creamed salt cod) and the finest seafood in northern Italy. The most authentic Venetian dining experience is the cicchetti (Venetian tapas) — small snacks served at the bacari (traditional Venetian wine bars) in the Rialto market area. The best bacari are in the Cannaregio and Dorsoduro neighbourhoods.

07

Getting Lost & Neighbourhoods

The finest way to experience Venice is to get lost in the narrow calli (lanes) away from the main tourist routes. The most authentic and atmospheric neighbourhoods are Cannaregio (the most genuine Venetian neighbourhood, with the Jewish Ghetto — the oldest in the world), Dorsoduro (the most artistic neighbourhood, with the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection) and Castello (the largest and most authentic sestiere, with the extraordinary Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni and the Arsenale).

08

Practical Tips

Venice Marco Polo Airport is 20 minutes from the city by water taxi or 30 minutes by vaporetto. The city is car-free — everything is on foot or by boat. The vaporetto (water bus) is the main public transport. Book accommodation well in advance — Venice has limited hotel stock and prices are high. April to June and September to October are the best times to visit. July and August are extremely crowded and hot. The Venice Carnival (February) is the most extraordinary festival in Italy. Acqua alta (high water flooding) occurs mainly in November–January.
