Hanoi Holiday Guide

Hanoi is one of the most atmospheric capitals in Asia — a city of extraordinary contrasts, where ancient pagodas stand beside French colonial mansions, where street food vendors cook on the pavement beside luxury restaurants, and where the chaotic energy of the Old Quarter gives way to the serenity of Hoan Kiem Lake.

The Old Quarter is the heart of Hanoi — 36 ancient guild streets of extraordinary atmosphere, French colonial architecture and the finest street food in Vietnam. Spend at least two evenings wandering the streets, eating from the pavement vendors and drinking bia hoi (fresh draught beer, brewed daily and sold for 20p a glass) on a plastic stool.

Hoan Kiem Lake is the most peaceful spot in the city — the Ngoc Son Temple on its island, the red Huc Bridge and the legendary giant turtle make it one of the most iconic images in Vietnam. The Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum are both unmissable.

Ha Long Bay is 3.5 hours from Hanoi — an overnight cruise is one of the great travel experiences in Asia. Book through a reputable operator (Indochina Junk, Paradise Cruises, Bhaya Cruises) for the best experience.

The best time to visit Hanoi is October to April — cool and dry. May to September is hot and humid with heavy rain. We search across Travelpack, Emirates Holidays and JTA Holidays for the best deals, with the FIBI discount applied automatically.

Top 8 Things To Do in Hanoi

The ancient streets, serene lakes, imperial monuments and extraordinary street food that make Hanoi one of the most captivating capitals in Asia.

01

Old Quarter — 36 Ancient Streets

Hanoi's Old Quarter is one of the most extraordinary urban neighbourhoods in Asia — 36 ancient guild streets each traditionally specialising in a single trade (Hang Bac for silver, Hang Gai for silk, Hang Ma for paper goods). The French colonial architecture, the ancient tube houses, the street food vendors and the chaotic motorbike traffic create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.

02

Hoan Kiem Lake & Ngoc Son Temple

Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Restored Sword) is the heart of Hanoi — a serene lake in the centre of the city, home to the legendary giant turtle and the beautiful Ngoc Son Temple (reached by the iconic red Huc Bridge). The lake is surrounded by trees and is the most peaceful spot in the city. The Turtle Tower on a small island in the lake is one of the most iconic images in Vietnam.

03

Hanoi Street Food

Hanoi has the finest street food in Vietnam — bun cha (grilled pork with rice noodles and herbs, made famous when Anthony Bourdain ate it with Barack Obama), pho bo (beef noodle soup), banh mi, bun rieu (crab noodle soup), cha ca (turmeric fish with dill) and the legendary egg coffee (ca phe trung) — a thick, creamy egg yolk whipped with condensed milk over strong Vietnamese coffee.

04

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum & Ba Dinh Square

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Ba Dinh Square is where Ho Chi Minh's embalmed body lies in state — one of the most visited sites in Vietnam. The adjacent Ho Chi Minh Museum, the Presidential Palace (where Ho Chi Minh refused to live) and the One Pillar Pagoda (built in 1049) are all unmissable. The mausoleum is closed on Mondays and Fridays and for two months each year for maintenance.

05

Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature (Van Mieu) is Vietnam's first university, founded in 1070 — a beautiful complex of courtyards, pavilions and gardens dedicated to Confucius and the scholars of Vietnam. The 82 stone stelae bearing the names of doctoral graduates from 1442 to 1779 are UNESCO-listed. One of the most beautiful and peaceful sites in Hanoi.

06

Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton)

Hoa Lo Prison — nicknamed the 'Hanoi Hilton' by American POWs during the Vietnam War — is one of the most fascinating and sobering museums in Vietnam. Originally built by the French to imprison Vietnamese political prisoners, it later held American pilots including John McCain. The museum tells both stories with extraordinary candour.

07

Ha Long Bay — Day Trip or Overnight

Ha Long Bay, 3.5 hours from Hanoi, is the most iconic natural wonder in Vietnam — 1,600 limestone karst islands rising from the emerald Gulf of Tonkin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day trips are possible but an overnight cruise on a traditional junk boat is far superior — kayaking through sea caves, swimming in hidden lagoons and watching the sunrise over the karsts.

08

West Lake & Tay Ho

West Lake (Ho Tay) is the largest lake in Hanoi — a beautiful 15km² lake in the north-west of the city, surrounded by the upscale Tay Ho district with its excellent restaurants, cafes and boutique hotels. The Tran Quoc Pagoda (the oldest pagoda in Hanoi, dating from the 6th century) sits on a small island in the lake. The lakeside promenade is beautiful at sunset.
