Albufeira has some of the finest beaches in the Algarve — a series of beautiful golden sand beaches stretching along the coastline. Praia dos Pescadores (the Fishermens Beach) is the most central and atmospheric — a beautiful cove directly below the old town, with golden sand, clear water and dramatic cliff scenery. Praia da Oura (the Strip beach) is the most lively — popular with the nightlife crowd. Praia de Santa Eulalia (east of town) is the finest family beach — long, wide and less crowded.
The Albufeira old town is the most charming and atmospheric part of the resort — a beautiful whitewashed Moorish town on the clifftop above the Fishermens Beach, with narrow cobbled lanes, traditional azulejo-tiled buildings, excellent restaurants and a lively central square (Largo Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco). The old town is the finest place to eat and drink in Albufeira and has a much more authentic Portuguese atmosphere than the Strip. The old town tunnel connects the clifftop to the beach below.
Albufeira has the best nightlife in Portugal — the Strip (Avenida Sa Carneiro) is the most famous nightlife street in the Algarve, lined with bars, clubs and restaurants that stay open until dawn. The most popular venues include the Kiss Club (the largest and most famous nightclub in the Algarve), the Liberto's (the most upmarket club) and the dozens of bars along the Strip. The old town also has a lively bar scene that is more relaxed and less commercial than the Strip.
Albufeira has excellent water sports facilities — the beaches have a wide range of activities including jet skiing, parasailing, banana boats, paddleboarding and kayaking. Boat trips along the cliff coastline are the most popular activity — departing from the marina, the trips visit sea caves, rock arches and the famous Benagil Cave. Dolphin watching trips also depart from the marina and have a very high success rate. The marina is the best base for water sports and boat trips.
Albufeira Marina is the best base for boat trips in the central Algarve — a wide range of trips depart daily, including trips to the Benagil Cave (the most popular excursion in the Algarve), cliff coastline tours, dolphin watching trips, fishing trips and sunset cruises. The Benagil Cave trip is unmissable — the cave is the most beautiful natural feature in Portugal and is best seen from the water. Book boat trips in advance during peak season.
Albufeira has excellent restaurants — the old town has the finest dining, with a concentration of good Portuguese and international restaurants in the streets around the central square. The best include the Tasca do Viegas (the finest traditional Portuguese restaurant in Albufeira), the Adega do Simao (excellent grilled fish and seafood) and the many good restaurants along the Rua Candido dos Reis. The Strip has more tourist-oriented restaurants but also some good options.
Albufeira is the best base for day trips in the central Algarve — the resort is well-positioned for excursions to the Benagil Cave (30 minutes by boat), the Ria Formosa Natural Park (1 hour east), the historic town of Silves (30 minutes inland), the Zoomarine water park (15 minutes) and the beautiful beaches of Carvoeiro and Marinha (30 minutes west). The resort has excellent transport connections and a wide range of organised excursions.
Albufeira is 40 minutes from Faro Airport by taxi or transfer. The resort is divided into the old town (clifftop) and the Strip (Avenida Sa Carneiro, 2km east). The old town is the better base for those who want a more authentic experience; the Strip is better for those who want nightlife. May to October is the best time to visit. July and August are the most crowded — book accommodation well in advance. June and September are the best months for a quieter visit.
