Alfama is the oldest and most atmospheric neighbourhood in Lisbon — a labyrinth of narrow cobbled lanes, whitewashed buildings, Moorish arches and extraordinary viewpoints (miradouros) climbing the hillside below the Sao Jorge Castle. The neighbourhood is the spiritual home of fado music and has the most authentic and characterful atmosphere in the city. The Sao Jorge Castle (Castelo de Sao Jorge) at the top of the hill has extraordinary views of the city and the Tagus estuary.
Belem is the most historically significant neighbourhood in Lisbon — the district from which Vasco da Gama and the Portuguese explorers set sail for the Age of Discovery. The Jeronimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jeronimos) is the finest example of Manueline architecture in Portugal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Belem Tower (Torre de Belem) is the most iconic monument in Portugal. The Pasteis de Belem bakery (the original pastel de nata custard tart bakery, open since 1837) is the most famous food destination in Lisbon.
Lisbon has the finest food scene in the Iberian Peninsula — a city of extraordinary restaurants, traditional tascas, seafood restaurants, wine bars and the most celebrated pastry shops in Europe. The best experiences include the Time Out Market (the finest food market in Europe, with stalls from the best chefs in Lisbon), the Mercado da Ribeira (the traditional fish and produce market), the tascas of Alfama (traditional Portuguese restaurants with fado music) and the extraordinary wine bars of the Bairro Alto.
Fado is the soul music of Portugal — a UNESCO-recognised intangible cultural heritage, a melancholic and beautiful musical tradition of extraordinary emotional power. Lisbon is the home of fado and the finest place in the world to experience it. The best fado houses (casas de fado) are in Alfama and the Bairro Alto — the most celebrated include the Clube de Fado, the Mesa de Frades and the Tasca do Chico. A fado dinner in Alfama is the most authentic and memorable cultural experience in Lisbon.
The vintage yellow trams of Lisbon are the most iconic image of the city — the Tram 28 (the most famous tram route, running through Alfama and the Graca neighbourhood) is the finest way to see the old city. The miradouros (viewpoints) are the finest feature of Lisbon — the city has dozens of extraordinary viewpoints overlooking the terracotta rooftops, the Tagus estuary and the distant hills. The finest are the Miradouro da Graca, the Miradouro de Santa Luzia and the Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara.
The LX Factory is the most fashionable and creative destination in Lisbon — a former industrial complex in the Alcantara neighbourhood, transformed into a vibrant hub of independent shops, restaurants, bars, galleries and creative studios. The Sunday market (Feira da Ladra) is the most popular market in Lisbon. The Bairro Alto is the most vibrant nightlife neighbourhood — a dense grid of narrow streets packed with bars, restaurants and fado houses that come alive after midnight.
Lisbon is the finest base for day trips in Portugal — the most celebrated include Sintra (the most beautiful town in Portugal, 40 minutes by train — palaces, castles and extraordinary gardens in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape), Cascais (a beautiful coastal town with excellent beaches, 40 minutes by train) and Setubal and the Arrabida Natural Park (the most beautiful coastline near Lisbon, 1 hour south). All are easily accessible by public transport.
Lisbon Airport is 20 minutes from the city centre by metro. The city is best explored on foot and by tram — the historic neighbourhoods (Alfama, Bairro Alto, Chiado, Belem) are all walkable. March to October is the best time to visit. July and August are the hottest and most crowded. April, May, September and October are the best months — warm, less crowded and lower prices. The Lisboa Card (24/48/72 hours) gives unlimited public transport and free entry to most museums.
